BE MESSY
My training and passion has exposed me to a world of perfectly prepared and decorated cakes, cookies, and cupcakes. I am in awe of the many talented people who masterfully practice this craft. I’m fairly good - but recognize true talent when I see it. I also recognize the beauty of pure joy when I see it, and that happens when my family makes these Hanukkah cookies.
Originally, I had ideas of teaching the kids the finer techniques of cookie dough making, different icings, frostings, piping, decorating, etc., and turning them into cookie decorating pros. That did not happen. It still hasn’t happened. It won’t happen. Herding cats would be easier. Guess what? It’s ok!
What they enjoy is the process. They enjoy climbing over each other to get the right cookie cutter, and getting icing everywhere. It doesn’t matter that the dough is way too soft, or thick, or whatever. They’re simply having fun. These cookies are one of the most beautiful things I know.
